At Montague House, the children's home that housed 20 abandoned kids including me, oral story-telling was considered recreation. In between fighting with each other (we did that a lot) we would sometimes sit around & tell each other stories, recite poems & nursery rhymes. Most of which I enjoyed except one...."There was a little girl who had a little curl..." Based on a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow this nursery rhyme always gave me the creeps, so when I heard it again recently I decided I would re-write the ending....

tHERE WAS A LITTLE GIRL
You take your
finger
linger
on my memory switch
itch
scratch
the six year old girl
who had a curl
right in the middle
of her forehead
Now forward
in time
You tell me
"erase the line..
'& when she was bad
she was horrid' "
now write
"There was a little girl
who had a little curl
right in the middle
of her forehead
& when she was good
she was very very good
& when she was bad
she was....
still lovely
still beautiful
still mine"
Apparently the original nursery rhyme is now considered 'lost'...I for one am glad about that!
